Respecting the Brain.

What do we know about the brain and how does what we know (or think we know) drive how we teach. John Medina and his book Brain Rules breaks the latest brain research into 12 principles/rules. His book is a great read and it is supported by companion DVD. Much of the video content on the DVD is shared on his website @BrainRules.net. On this site you can access information/activities to support all 12 principles/rules by selection the icon at the top of the media window.

Check out this news report that does a great job of summarizing the book.

Podcast Encore

The three podcasts presented at Friday night’s class convinced me that this ED554 assignment needs to have freedom of choice for the subject matter (no more summaries of the course readings). The podcasts shared were distinctly different, informative and extremely creative. BRAVO.

Check out each one below.

Blaise Pascal by Erick, Holly and Kathy

Gardening in Northern Virginia by Cindy, Karen & Shabrayle

Deer Population Control by Molly, Leslie, Lindsey and Catherine

Presentation Tuesday Night at NSF in Arlington

Hey all, I forgot to extend this invitation to you earlier.

Martin Ogle and I are giving a presentation this evening in the atrium of the National Science Foundation building on using Entrepreneurship, Systems Theory, and Integrative STEM Education Strategies to Facilitate Sustainability.  This is part of the Ballston Partnership for Science and Technology’s Cafe Scientifique Lecture Series.  Martin is a local and national expert on GAIA Theory (the foundation for Earth Systems Science), and I’ll be talking about local and national efforts in integrative, interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary education.

Half-price  burgers and beer start at 5:30pm (atrium side of The Front Page), and we start at 6:30pm. We’ll talk for only 20-30 minutes, followed by questions and discussion.  Lots of parking.   Please come if your schedule allows.
